Anxiety Q & A
What is anxiety?
Anxiety includes a group of mental health disorders that cause pervasive and often disproportionate worries and fears that can interfere with your quality of life. For example, general anxiety disorder is the most common type of anxiety disorder. If you have general anxiety disorder, you might have intrusive negative thoughts and fears about day-to-day situations like work, family, health, or routine chores.
Other types of anxiety include:
- Panic disorder
- Separation anxiety
- Social anxiety
- Specific phobias
It’s normal to feel nervous or fearful from time to time. An anxiety disorder causes intrusive negative thoughts and feelings that get in the way of your ability to function normally and are out of proportion to the real risk.
What are the signs of anxiety?
In addition to the pervasive and intrusive fears, anxiety causes a variety of mental and physical symptoms, including:
- Mental, emotional, and physical tension
- Sense of impending danger
- Inability to control worry
- Urge to avoid triggers
- Rapid heart rate and respiration
- Sweating
- Trembling
- Reduced concentration
- Gastrointestinal problems
You might also experience panic attacks. Panic attacks are episodes when you experience several severe physical symptoms. Many people think they’re having a heart attack when they have a panic attack.
